Lia Suzuki held an Aikido demonstration on Sunday, March 23, at her dojo, Aikido Kenkyukai, in Santa Barbara. Lia, who once taught Aikido in Montecito, opened her own dojo last spring. The youngest student giving a demo was three-year-old Francesca Diamond. Dressed in her Aikido robe, belt and pants, the little girl demonstrated front and back rolls the length of the dojo. Lia explained that Aikido means: ‘Ai” is the kanji which means “blending, harmonizing, and adjusting,” “Ki” (chi in Chinese) is translated as the “energy” or “life energy” and the “Do” is translated as the “path or the way”, which is the part that is up to each individual.
