Lia Suzuki Lia Suzuki, 5th dan
Aikido Kenkyukai International (AKI Santa Barbara Dojo) Santa Barbara, CA

Lia Suzuki Sensei began Aikido in 1982. From 1987, for nine years, she trained in Kamakura, Japan with her present teacher and top student of the late grand master Seigo Yamaguchi Shihan, Takeda Yoshinobu Shihan, 8th dan. Suzuki was introduced to Takeda Shihan through her first teacher, William Gleason Sensei, 6th dan.

In 1996, Takeda Shihan directed her to begin dojos back in the USA. She formed AKI Pennsylvania in 1996 and AKI Santa Barbara in 1999.

In addition to teaching standard aikido classes in Pennsylvania and California, Lia Sensei also began pioneering work. She has worked with youth and adults with mental health and substance abuse issues, using aikido as a therapeutic vehicle. In this ongoing work, the dojo has worked closely with such organizations as:

During her 9-year stay in Japan, she also studied the Japanese language and culture, while continuing her practice of aikido. She presently holds the rank of 5th dan.
Matt Bridi Matt Bridi, 3rd dan
Aikido Kenkyukai International (AKI Santa Barbara Dojo) Santa Barbara, CA

Matt Bridi began studying Aikido in 1993. He spent one year as an uchi deshi (live-in student) at a dojo affiliated with Aikido Schools of Ueshiba. This led to his training with a number of students of Takeda Shihan of Aikido Kenkyukai International. Since 1996 he has studied exclusively with Lia Suzuki Sensei at her AKI (Aikido Kenkyukai International) dojos in both Pennsylvania and Santa Barbara.

Matt has had the opportunity to train with Takeda Shihan at seminars in Canada and Santa Barbara, as well as on 3 trips to Japan over the past 10 years.

One of the main focal points of his training in recent years has been working with the youth program at AKI Santa Barbara . He has a strong interest in studying the positive impact of Aikido training on the development of young people, especially in regard to attention and fitness.

Daily training in the Art of Peace allows your inner divinity to shine brighter and brighter. Do not concern yourself with the right and wrong of others. Do not be calculating or act unnaturally. Keep your mind set on the Art of Peace, and do not criticize other teachers or traditions. The Art of Peace never restrains, restricts, or shackles anything. It embraces all and purifies everything.
