Parents’ & Kids’ Class, Spring 2007

March 10th, 2007

On Sat. March 10th I attended a parent/child Aikido class with my son Spencer who, at 10, has been a student for nearly three years. The total experience was profoundly enjoyable. We assembled inside the dojo, which can best can be described as a sacred gym sparsely decorated with a Japanese scroll that everyone bows to before beginning to train. Thereafter, we raced, we tumbled, we sparred and we trained with a wooden training sword called a “bokto.” I had forgotten how much fun 45 minutes of structured exercise can be, and the exposure to Japanese culture was a big bonus.

Well, for me of course, getting to do Aikido again was great! And I love training with Francesca. Being able to play with my daughter like that…

What did you get out of the experience?
A reminder of the sense of the spirit of the group. Each time we have a public event, it serves as a reminder of what it means/how much it means to the kids. Also you can see how confident they are at the events.

I loved being taught by the kids. It was fun actually being IN the class, instead of just peeking in the door when I drop him off. And I loved the ritual and the formality. It’s really beautiful.

Dearest Lia Sensei,

While Corbin and I only watched, as he is yet too young and inexperienced, we were thrilled to be able to observe what Corbin may look forward to. Thank you for inviting us as observers. The kids leading the class were amazing. Sensei patiently guided the children’s efforts. Parents and kids are relaxed and composed with each other, ever respectful. These average kids have achieved excellent skills. They were thrilled to demonstrate what they’ve learned. There were big smiles and fun all around. The dojo is a joyful place.

Each time we attend Aikido at AKI Santa Barbara, I am amazed at the big smiles among the kids. Everyone has a great time. Corbin has been rapidly developing thoughtful self-discipline, and he’s always excited about attending his Akidio classes.

Blessings, -Boyd
