Aikido Roll-A-Thon Interviews

img_1664.jpg On Tuesday February 24th Aikido Kenkyukai Santa Barbara had its fundraiser event. It started at 5:30 pm at the Santa Barbara Buddhist Temple. Three adults and five children participated in the fundraiser. At the end I, Vanessa, interviewed its participants. Here are the results:

Children

· Name: Adrian Hoyle, the youngest of the event.

· What does participating in aikido mean to you? Makes me strong

· How many rolls did you do? 156

Name: Spencer Glesby

· What does participating in aikido mean to you? It means to make friends

· Why is it important to get your dojo back? Aikido is part of my life and I don’t want to stop.

· What is the most important lesson you have learned by training in aikido?

· How long have you trained? Since I was 6 years old

· How many rolls did you do? 166

Spencer explained to the audience the belt system with great confidence at the end of the event.

· Why is it important to get your dojo back? You don’t hit your head when you roll

· What is the most important lesson you have learned by training in aikido? How to defend myself

· How long have you trained? 2 years

· What does participating in aikido mean to you? Having fun, hang out with friends, concentration.

· Why is it important to get your dojo back? To have our own space and to focus on training.

· What is the most important lesson you have learned by training in aikido? Bockto training. It is like a sword.

· How long have you trained? 2 ½ years

· How many rolls did you do? 185

· What does participating in aikido mean to you? Fun and a good workout. Learning to be a stronger and a better person. Confidence in yourself.

· Why is it important to get your dojo back? We got used to it. There are more possibilities. It’s ours.

· What is the most important lesson you have learned by training in aikido? How to be safe and about personal space.

· How long have you trained? Since I was 3 years old. I’m nine years old.

· How many rolls did you do? 121

Francesca told us she is a senpai. That means she is the one who has been training the most. It does not count age, but rather time trained.

Adults

· Name: Matt Bridi

· What does participating in aikido mean to you? It is a place to work out a lot of issues in life.

· Why is it important to get your dojo back? It is a place of our own. We can put our energy and have it reflected on us. It is easier to see, to grow and for people to come this art should be accessible to more people.

· What is the most important lesson you have learned by training in aikido? That there are more shades of gray than black and white.

· How long have you trained? For 16 years

· How many rolls did you do? Around 100

· What does participating in aikido mean to you? It is an art form to express more accurately feelings.

· Why is it important to get your dojo back? It is a sacred place to acknowledge we’re here to train. It represents s commitment to the art.

· What is the most important lesson you have learned by training in aikido? There is a lot to learn about aikido.

· How long have you trained? 8 years

· How many rolls did you do? 100
