On Feb. 1, Aikido Kenkukai Santa Barbara signed a sublease with Steve Hoyt who rents a dojo, or training hall, space at 121A Mason St.
A nonprofit judo instructor, Hoyt is renovating the interior of the building to accommodate more martial arts classes. He also is seeking another tenant.
AKSB Sensei Lia Suzuki is quite familiar with the Mason Street site because she has taught classes there in the past. The new dojo is a block from the beach and has ample parking.
For the past two years, Suzuki has taught classes at the Santa Barbara Buddhist Temple at 1015 E. Montecito St. However, it became apparent last fall that AKSB had outgrown that space and a new site had to be found.
The move was made possible largely thanks to an anonymous donor who pledged a $1,000 donation, provided that the organization could raise the remaining immediate funding necessary to make the move. The additional $2,000 was raised in about 3 days, largely employing social media. The group will continue to raise funds for its charitable work with low-income children, as well as grow the membership. Those wishing further details are directed to contact the organization at 805-870-5437 or info@aksb.org.
