My name is Oxana and I am a new intern at Aikido Kenkyukai Santa Barbara.
Born in Moscow, I lived in Russia and Kazakhstan for eight years before moving to Los Angeles. I now attend UC Santa Barbara, where I am double majoring in Dance and Global Studies.
I decided to intern for Aikido Kenkyukai Santa Barbara because of the opportunity to learn something new (the administrative aspect of managing a non-profit) while becoming involved in the Santa Barbara community and contributing to the development of this wonderful dojo.
As a dancer, I enjoy watching aikido practice because the controlled yet seemingly relaxed movements remind me of masterful dance choreography, or perhaps more accurately, dance improvisation. I appreciate the wealth of tradition, culture and philosophy that is embedded in the study of aikido.
And of course, it is a pleasure working with Lia Sensei. She is a knowledgeable and patient teacher not only in the realm of aikido but also in the areas of administration, networking and social media.
I feel like I am helping out and learning valuable skills. It’s a win-win situation!
P.S. My first intro aikido class is coming up soon! Super excited (and perhaps a tiny-bit nervous…) to put on the uniform and get out there on the mat!
